Growing smarter not just bigger

In 2024, Ecko outgrew its previous premises in East Tāmaki. The business relied on third-party logistics providers, but things weren’t working.

The move to a Goodman property in Mount Wellington made that possible. With double the storage capacity, four dedicated pick-and-pack stations and room for a busy service workshop, Ecko brought everything in-house – from stock management to tool repair. The result?

“It has given us the ability to hold a lot more stock,” says Josh. “And in turn, it’s made our sales team more confident … The worst thing you can do is go to customers, sell them the world, and not deliver.”

A practical place for a practical business

Ecko chose this particular Goodman site for three reasons: location, layout and value.

“Honestly, it was cost,” Josh laughs. “We don’t need a flashy place. 99% of what we sell is delivered. We just needed something that worked well and was within our budget.”

The property’s history adds character. It was once a Sky TV studio with backup power outlets and a lightning rod on the roof. Goodman has helped modernise and maintain it for Ecko’s new life as a busy distribution centre.

“They’ve been pretty good…coming to the party,” Josh says. “Things like upgrading the yard area and managing the gate maintenance – they’ve been very quick to react, which has been fantastic.

Family first, business second

Despite its growth, Ecko still runs like a family business. Many of the warehouse team are literally family – siblings, cousins and friends who’ve been with the company for years.

That loyalty extends to the company’s values. Ecko prefers to source locally when possible. It uses display boxes made of New Zealand timber, and all its packaging is recyclable. It also works closely with partners like Firth on new product designs that meet changing regulations.
