How to reduce upfront embodied carbon from concrete and steel, which are Goodman NZ’s largest sources of carbon emissions in construction.

Of all the materials used during construction, over 80% of the upfront embodied carbon emissions are attributed to steel and concrete.

Solutions

Steel

Nauhria, a supplier of reinforcing steel for foundations and precast panels for several Goodman projects, use NatSteel, which has approximately 80% less embodied carbon intensity compared to the most commonly used reinforcing steel in New Zealand. The reduced carbon footprint is achieved by using high recycled content (up to 95%) and energy-efficient production processes, at an electric arc furnace facility in Singapore.

Goodman’s warehouse and yard slabs contain fibre reinforcement with low GWP compared to traditional bar reinforcement sourced in New Zealand, reducing carbon emissions through both the quantity and carbon intensity of the reinforcement.

Concrete

Innovations in the concrete industry enable Goodman’s warehouse slabs to have up to 25% less embodied carbon compared to standard concrete. This has been achieved by establishing GWP targets and promoting initiatives for the concrete mix.

Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs)

Since 2021, Goodman has conducted independent LCAs to measure and understand the upfront embodied carbon of its projects more accurately. This allows us to identify key sources of emissions and target them effectively.

Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)

Requested by Goodman from suppliers provides greater transparency of building materials, supporting sustainable decision making.
